Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for Outgoing Mail
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) refers to the standard method for encryption and authentication on the Internet. This added security provides you with protection against having your password stolen on an insecure connection.

SSL configuration is NOT mandatory. Nor is it necessary to use SSL to receive email through your Thrift Internet account.

Configuring your Email Client for SSL (outgoing mail)
Note: These instructions assume your email client is already properly configured to access your Thrift Internet email. When using SSL for outgoing email, it is recommended that you have only the default SMTP account information (mail.Thrift Internet.net).
Email programs that do NOT support SSL
SSL is NOT supported in older email programs such as Netscape 3.x, Eudora 3.x, Eudora Lite, Netscape Communicator 4.7.5 (Mac). Eudora does not support SSL in Mac OS X 10.0 or 10.1. You must upgrade to Mac OS X 10.2 or later in order to use SSL with Mac Eudora.
If you do not use one of the versions that support SSL, you will need to upgrade to a higher version. Note that if upgrading, most programs will keep your settings and messages, but there are no guarantees that nothing will be lost. To upgrade the most common email programs, some links are provided for your convenience: Outlook Express/Internet Explorer -- Netscape -- Eudora.
Windows
- Open Eudora.
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- In the Options dialog box, click the Sending Mail icon in the Category panel.
- Place a check in Allow authentication.
- Select Required, Alternate Port from the Secure Sockets when Sending pull-down menu.
If Required, Alternate Port does not work, select Required, STARTTLS if Required. However, if you use this method, mail.Thrift Internet.net must be specified as the server in "Outgoing Mail".
- Click OK.
- Exit Eudora before using SSL for the first time.
Note: If you have problems enabling SSL for Eudora: Select "Options..." from the "Tools" menu. Scroll down to, and select, "Advanced Network". Change the settings as follows:
- Network Open Timeout [300] Seconds
- Network timeout after [300] Seconds
- Network buffer size of [8192] bytes
Top
- Open Outlook 2002. From the Tools menu, select Email Accounts.
- Choose View or Change existing email accounts and click Next.
- Select your Thrift Internet email account and then click Change....
- Click More Settings....
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Under Outgoing server (SMTP), place a check in the box labeled section at the top, place a check in the box labeled This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
- Click OK and then click Next.
- Select Finish.
- Exit Outlook 2002 and reopen it before you use SSL for the first time.

- Open Outlook Express, Outlook 2000 or Incredimail.
- Select Accounts from the Tools menu.
- Click the Mail tab.
- Select your Thrift Internet email account and click the Properties button.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Under Outgoing server (SMTP), place a check in the box labeled section at the top, place a check in the box labeled This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
- Click OK and then click Close.
- Exit Outlook Express/Outlook/Incredimail and reopen it before you use SSL for the first time.

- Open Netscape Messenger.
- Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
- On the left frame, locate Mail and Newsgroups and click the plus (+) to expand the tree. Select Mail Servers from the list.
- On the Outgoing Mail Server section, type your Thrift Internet username in the Outgoing mail server username: field.
- Place a tick in the radio button labeled Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or TLS for outgoing messages.
- Click OK and OK again.
- Exit Netscape Messenger and reopen it before you use SSL for the first time.

- Open Netscape Mail. If opening Mail via the browser, for Netscape 6.x, go to Tasks and select Mail & Newsgroups for Netscape 7.x, go to Window and select Mail & Newsgroups.
- From the Edit menu,select Mail & News Groups Account Settings.
- Click Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left.
- On the right, place a tick in the radio button labeled When available (or Always) under Use secure connection (SSL):.
- Click OK.
- Exit Netscape Mail and reopen it before you use SSL for the first time.

Macintosh
Note: Eudora 5.1 only works with Mac OS 9 or higher. Mac OS X users must use Eudora 5.2
- Open Eudora and from the Special menu, select Settings.
- Select the Sending Mail icon in the Settings window and make sure the SMTP server is set to mail.Thrift Internet.net, then place a check in Allow Authorization.
- Click the SSL icon in the Settings window.
- In the Secure Sockets Layer section select Required (Alternate Port) next to SSL for SMTP: .
If Required, Alternate Port does not work, select Required, STARTTLS if Required. However, if you use this method, mail.Thrift Internet.net must be specified as the server in "Outgoing Mail".
- Under the Secure Sockets when Sending select Required, Alternate Port from the pull-down menu.
- Exit Eudora and reopen it before using SSL for the first time.

- Place a check next to This SMTP service requires a secure connection (SSL).
- Click OK.
- Exit Outlook Express or Entourage before you use SSL for the first time.

- Open OS X Mail.
- On the Mail menu, select Preferences.
- Select your Thrift Internet account and click the Edit button.
- Click the Options button.
- Place a check next to Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL).
- Click OK and OK again.
- Exit OS X mail before you use authentication for the first time.
