Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for Incoming Mail
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) refers to the standard method for encryption and authentication on the Internet. Thrift Internet supports encrypted password connections for email clients. This added security provides you with protection against having your password stolen on an insecure connection.

Note:
Secure Webmail is also available. Go to https://mail.Thrift Internet.net and log on with your Thrift Internet email address and password.
|
SSL configuration is NOT mandatory. Nor is it necessary to use SSL to receive email through your Thrift Internet account.
|
Configuring your Email Client for SSL (incoming)
Note: These instructions assume your email client is already properly configured to access your Thrift Internet email.
|
Removing messages from the server before configuring SSL when using POP3
If you use POP to transfer your email, we recommend that you download your messages (clean the inbox on the server) before you configure your SSL connection. Switching to SSL may cause certain email clients to download all messages, even those you have already read. While messages will not be lost, cleaning up before configuring your email program eliminates the inconvenience of deleting old messages.

Email programs that do NOT support SSL
SSL is NOT supported in older email programs such as Netscape 3.x, Eudora 3.x, Eudora Lite, Netscape Communicator 4.7.5 (Mac) and some programs provide SSL support with the IMAP protocol ONLY. Eudora does not support SSL in Mac OS X 10.0 or 10.1. You must upgrade to Mac OS X 10.2 or later in order to use SSL with Mac Eudora.
If you do not use one of the versions that support SSL, you will need to upgrade to a higher version. Note that if upgrading, most programs will keep your settings and messages, but there are no guarantees that nothing will be lost. To upgrade the most common email programs, some links are provided for your convenience: Outlook Express/Internet Explorer -- Netscape -- Eudora.

Macintosh
Note: Eudora 5.1 does not work with versions of Mac OS prior to OS 9 due to the fact that SSL on the Mac requires the use of the "Keychain Access" control panel that older OS versions lack and generate a Type 3 Error when SSL is configured. Earlier versions of Eudora do not support POP or IMAP SSL.
The current Mac OS 10.1.x version of Eudora does not currently support SSL. If you are running OS 10.1.x, you may use the OS 9.x version of Eudora under the "Classic Mode" environment.
To determine the version of Eudora that you are currently running, launch Eudora and go under the Apple and select About Eudora…
- Create a Keychain selecting the Keychain Access control panel from the Apple menu.
If no keychain currently exists on your computer:
-
- Click the Create button on the window that appears.
- In the next window that appears, type Thrift Internet into the Keychain Name box and click the Create button. Do NOT type in a password.
- Click Yes on the Warning window that appears.
- Select Quit from the File menu to exit the program.
Note: If the Keychain Access control window opens without prompting you to create a keychain, you have already created a keychain. Skip to the next step.
