If you are unable to start the Connection Wizard or if you do not wish to use the Connection Wizard, you can set up Windows 98 manually:
Open My Computer and double click the Dial-Up Networking icon. Double click Make New Connection.
Enter Thrift Internet for the Connection name and, if necessary, select your modem from the drop down list. Click Next.
Enter your Local Access Number into the Telephone number field. Click Next then click Finish.
The new connection is created. There are a few options that need to be changed:
Right click the new Thrift Internet icon and select Properties. -- OR -- Click once on the Thrift Internet icon to highlight it, click the File menu and select Properties.
Uncheck Use area code and Dialing Properties and enter your Local Access Number into the Telephone Number field.
While you can enable Dialing Properties, we recommend you type the entire number INCLUDING properties into the "Telephone Number:" field. The number should be entered exactly as it needs to be dialed. For example, if you need to dial the area code enter the number as XXX-XXX-XXXX.
To disable call waiting, type in *70, XXX-XXX-XXXX if you have tone dialing or 1170, XXX-XXX-XXXX if you have pulse dialing. Note: Some phone companies use 70# to disable call waiting; if this applies to you, type in 70#, XXX-XXX-XXXX. If you are not sure what your call waiting code is, please contact your telephone company for this information.
If you need to dial 9 to get an outside line, enter the number as 9, XXX-XXXX.
Note: Dashes (-) and spaces are not required, but using dashes can allow you to more clearly distinguish the area code from the exchange and the final 4 digits.
Click the Server Types tab. Uncheck Log on to network, NetBEUI, and IPX/SPX. Click OK.
To add an icon to your desktop: Right click the Thrift Internet icon and choose Create Shortcut. When prompted, select Yes to place the icon on the Desktop.
