Check the information on these pages for information and steps that may resolve the problem.

In addition to referencing the links above for troubleshooting steps, please note the following:

  1. Check your username and password to be sure they are correct and in lowercase without spaces. Try connecting with your username in the format of username@Thrift Internet.net.

  2. Check the phone number and dialing properties to be sure they are correct.

  3. The password file may have become corrupt. Try deleting and recreating the password file. Note: Windows 98 instructions are below. Instructions may vary slightly depending on your operating system.
    1. Go to Start, select Find the Files or Folders.
    2. In the Named: field, type in *.pwl. The .pwl extension is for password files, which are ascii (text) format.
    3. Select your hard drive [C:\] in the Look in: field.
    4. Click Find now.
    5. The .pwl files should show in the results window. Right click the .pwl file that begins with your Thrift Internet username (username.pwl) and select Delete. Deleting these files does NOT affect your dial-up connection; however, the password is not re-saved until you connect successfully.

Note: If your search does not give you any results, configure your settings to allow hidden files to appear by going to Start > Settings > Folder Options, clicking the "View" tab and selecting "Show all files" (Note: Change this back to the original setting after deleting the .pwl files).

  4. Try uninstalling and reinstalling TCP/IP or Dial-up Networking.

  5. Be sure the proper modem drivers are installed.

  6. Test using Hyperterminal or a Post-Terminal window.
